Bear Creek Farm & Ranch uses cornish-rock crosses for our meat chickens.  They are bred to grow fast, producing tender meat.  We have our birds processed at 7 to 9 weeks of age, with the longer time producing larger birds.

We receive our chicks at one or two days old and keep them inside under heat until they are 3 weeks old.  At that age, they are moved ouside on fresh pasture to finish growing.

Chickens will eat around 30 % of their diet in 'green food'.  The other 70% is grains and bugs.  We get our feed custom mixed.  It is a combination of grains, minerals, fish meal and kelp meal which gives them additonal green food, even before they go out on pasture.

We never use hormones or antibiotics on our chickens.  The pasture is free of chemicals.  We use what we call 'chicken tractors' which are large, bottomless, moveable pens that keep the birds shaded and safe from predators.

The chickens are also given grit, which is necessary for them to process their food.  Fresh water is also always available.  The chickens are processed at Central Illinois Poultry Processing in Arthur, IL.  They do a wonderful job processing the chickens.

Chickens are available in the summer months and are offered whole or cut up.  The cut up bird is still the whole chicken, just cut into pieces.
